Spouse’s Birthday Present (2010 Santa Cruz Blur XC Carbon) Maiden Weekend and Brown County Breakdown Preparation

Whew! Long title!

My wife’s birthday is coming up in October, and I had been thinking about what to get her. I had my eye on some Shredly shorts, which she really wants. I was about to pick a pair when my wife dropped a MAJOR hint. She had found a sweet bike in a classified ad for a really great price. Almost seemed too good to be true. I asked a lot of specific questions, and got very specific answers, and plenty of extra pictures. Seemed like a solid deal. We went for it. She wanted the bike for the Brown County Breakdown epic weekend of riding and fun in a few weeks. The bike came, and it was exactly as described, with a box full of extras. Awesome.

Busy Summer of Rides!

It’s been quite a summer. I haven’t updated much because I’ve been working a lot and when I’ve not been working, I’ve been riding a lot.

I’ve ridden a lot at Fort Harrison State Park.

I’ve ridden at Town Run Trail a few times.

SFA Recreational Trails 3 September 2011

It’s been a long time since I’ve gone for a midday ride. It’s been so horrendously hot it’s not been worth it. But with Tropical Storm Lee in the area, we got clouds, wind, and cooler temperatures. I really would have preferred we get some rain along with it, but I’ll take what I can get at this point. I took advantage of the temps and went for a ride.

SFA Trails in July

It’s been awhile since my last post. Grad school is keeping me busy. So are trips to Schlitterbahn and yard work.

Yesterday saw a slight cool-down due to northerly breezes and I took advantage. It was in the mid-90’s when I left and down to the mid-80’s when I finished up.

Kit McConnico – Lufkin

Today I went to Lufkin to help the folks from DET-TRAC and the Angelina Bike Club with some trail maintenance at Kit McConnico Park. I hadn’t ridden there yet and I thought it’d be a good opportunity to scope the trails out before riding.

Maintenance tasks were pretty simple – raking leaves off the corners, clear some downed trees, deberming, trim back trailside vegetation, move some trash cans that don’t get emptied, that sort of thing. After a few hours of doing that, the maintenance session ended and I got my opportunity to ride.

Video and Maps – SFA Trails Vid Trial 1

As I’ve posted before, I got my hands on a new GoPro HD Hero recently. My first “video” wasn’t much – essentially just a backyard test. I was supposed to get some real footage on Friday, but a mechanical problem halted that. So, Monday was my next opportunity, and I took advantage. I got to get some ride footage of the local trails.

Mountain Biking the Hercules Trail (Loop 5) at Cypress Bend Resort

Cypress Bend Nature TrailCypress Bend Nature TrailIn 2008 I started a little tradition of doing a trip to ride my mountain bike for my birthday. In 2009 I was not well enough for such a trip so I had to skip that year. This year, I chose to ride at Cypress Bend Resort on the trails they just opened this year. It’s about the same distance from me as Tyler State Park and I was hopeful that there might be some good trails there to add to my options.
