I went for a night ride for the first time this summer. It was my wife’s first night ride ever, so we stuck to the easy trail in town. Lanana Creek is a pretty easy option. There’s a good bit of pavement, but there’s enough dirt to satisfy for an easy ride, and there are even a couple of technical spots to offer a little challenge.
It was a rewarding ride. It’s been so hot lately that riding during the day just hasn’t worked. Middle of the day is too intense and baking. First thing in the morning is horribly sticky and humid. Nighttime works. I’ll be trying a regular departure time of 8pm for awhile now.
The Magicshine lights worked great. My wife and I operated with them on our helmets for this ride. I do like the light on my bars for commuting duty, but for riding trails, helmet mount is best if you only have one light to use. If you’ve got two, go helmet plus bar mount. Only difficulty with helmet mount is that you have to be sure to look away from people you want to talk to, which is counterintuitive.
The nighttime was full of sounds along the creek. The frogs and toads had quite a chorus going on their own. The insects really added to it. Some parts of the trail really gave us a tunnel effect with the lights that was cool. I finally located the ‘official’ website indicating the route of the trail and who’s permitted to use it. It’s on the City of Nacogdoches Parks Department website. They’ve got a PDF map of the trail up. It’s nothing special, but it works.
