I’ve been planning to visit the Upland Island Wilderness for awhile. I ordered a map from MyTopo for this area last summer and I’ve been trying to get out here since. On the 4th, with the wife out of town, I figured I’d go hike in the Upland Island Wilderness. I wanted to see the longleaf pine savannas and the spring-fed bogs at the exposures of the Catahoula Formation and photograph some of the carnivorous plants.

In the past few years, I’ve been thinking about eating healthier. Partially, as a result of battling cancer, but my thought processes on healthy eating began before that. You see, getting good vegetables in my diet hasn’t been difficult. A lot of people, in an effort to eat healthier or for ethical reasons, switch to vegetarian or vegan diets. Not me.
The plums began to ripen a couple weeks ago. My wife and I have been gorging ourselves on fresh plums from the Nacogdoches Farmer’s Market since we first saw them there. Tasty. This week, the peaches started to show up, too. I first saw them at the Texas Blueberry Festival over the weekend, but I wasn’t quite satisfied with their ripeness. Today, they’re beautifully ripe. Here’s our haul for this week. |

I’ve been wanting to smoke some meat for quite a long time. But, I’m waiting for my grill to die before I buy a grill I can use as a smoker (preferably one that has a side firebox so I can burn actual wood for smoke). I found out recently, however, that I can use my electric oven as a smoker in a pinch. I thank the
