Garmin Oregon 450: First Bike Ride

Yesterday I got the Oregon attached to the stem of my mountain bike for a 10 mile jaunt through town and on the local mtb trails.  I have a handful of impressions about how it worked in that application.  First, have I mentioned yet how I like the mounting system on this?

Garmin Oregon 450

Yeah, I’m not new to the game here. This GPS has been reviewed all over the internet already.

But, I decided that the Edge 705 wasn’t really for me. Here’s why:

  • I hated the little joystick on the etrex series, and I didn’t like it any better on the Edge.

Now here’s an interesting gadget that addresses some issues I’ve had with using an iPod Touch or an iPhone in the field as a GPS. GPS apps have been available since the beginning, I think. At first, the iPhone calculated location based on cell tower triangulation. It wasn’t long before Apple put a GPS chip into the iPhone and that has only resulted in an increase in the number of people who use their smartphones as a GPS in the boonies. Android phones and others have GPS chips in them, also.

Lanana Creek Trail at Night

I went for a night ride for the first time this summer. It was my wife’s first night ride ever, so we stuck to the easy trail in town. Lanana Creek is a pretty easy option. There’s a good bit of pavement, but there’s enough dirt to satisfy for an easy ride, and there are even a couple of technical spots to offer a little challenge.

Photo Gear

I’ve got a vacation coming up, and I plan on spending a good portion of my time learning some photography. The professional photographer I’ll be learning from suggested I get a few items. I already knew I needed a decent tripod. He suggested some filters for me. This post isn’t about the filters…I’m enough of a photography newbie that I don’t feel in a position to review those.

June 6, 2010 Ride

Today is Cancer Survivor Day.  I celebrated with a dawn mtb ride with my riding buddy.  I tend to not take so many pictures (any pictures) when I ride lately.  I’m just too busy riding.  I still do record GPS tracks, though.

WSS Open Source Sealant for Tubeless Bike Tires

After my experiment with inflating standard tires dry on UST rims, it was quickly obvious that I needed a sealant in order to use them tubeless.

I did some searching on homemade tire sealants and I stumbled across the WSS Open Source Sealant.

The basic recipe is as follows:

A Semi-Ghetto Tubeless Tire Conversion

I’ve been interested in trying tubeless tires on my mountain bike for a long time. I bought the Mavic CrossTrail UST Disc wheelset for my bike many years ago partly with the idea that I’d eventually try it out. I had a fairly new set of tubed tires at the time and I didn’t want to spring for $120 worth of rubber with those wheels at the time.

Lake MX 165

Well, my old Specialized BG Comp shoes have finally bitten the dust in recent weeks. A couple weeks ago, I noticed the sole delaminating from the uppers of these shoes. Considering the stresses put on bike shoes that clip into the pedals, I’m not even going to try gluing them back together. I’ve tried gluing shoes back together over the years, and it may work fine for small spots, but most definitely not for delaminations as severe as what my old Speshy shoes are experiencing.

Osprey Talon 22 Initial Review

I combined my REI dividend and 20% off coupon to grab a new pack. I really didn’t have a GOOD daypack for hiking, and I needed something I could mountain bike in for longer days. What I have works for short rides, but can’t carry enough gear well for an exploratory day.
