This post has been a few weeks in the making, but please forgive me. I’ve been riding my new bike when I haven’t been working. It’s nice that even though my workload has increased, my riding miles have also increased because of this new bike. Last weekend my wife competed in the half marathon in the Nike Women’s Marathon. Some regular readers might recall the fundraising links I posted and some of my readers actually donated (yay!). I thought I’d provide a bit of a trip report. Talking to some other riders in the area about our mtb trail opportunities, I got a somewhat crazy idea about linking our area trails together in a big, long ride. I wanted to do it all via county roads, but looking at maps of the area, it became apparent an all-county-road route would not be possible. The problem: the Angelina River bottoms. Between Nacogdoches and Lufkin, there’s only one road that crosses them: US-59. Not the ideal road because of its 70mph speed limit, but it’d really be the only option unless we REALLY wanted to go out of our way and probably spend days riding. Not this time. Sorry for the long interval between posts, readers. Grad school is hitting me hot & heavy. My thesis proposal got accepted (after half my data was collected already) and now it’s time to move on. Lots of computer work has been done this semester, and this summer will bring lots of processing and number crunching in order to meet a hopeful Fall 2011 graduation deadline. I had wanted to finish by the time I was 30. At this rate, I might be able to make it before I hit 31. Today I went to Lufkin to help the folks from DET-TRAC and the Angelina Bike Club with some trail maintenance at Kit McConnico Park. I hadn’t ridden there yet and I thought it’d be a good opportunity to scope the trails out before riding. Okay, so it’s getting to be time to break the monotony of riding the same place all the time. I need to hit some new trails. I got this thing about a year ago and I figured it’s time for a long-term report on it. You might have read my first post about the scale. After a year of using it and saving data, I’ve noticed a few things about it. I already wrote about my experience running a local 5k race to finish the Cancer to 5k program last weekend. I haven’t written in a little while, but I wanted to write about my experience in the Cancer to 5k program today. The Cancer to 5k program is put on by the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults (see their blog, too). I can only say positive things about the experience. I wanted to use the program as a springboard to regain my physical fitness and lose the weight I had been wanting to lose before I got sick. I had packed on a good 25lb in the couple years prior to getting sick, and my overall fitness was suffering. |
