Another Sunday, another weekly ride. This week was much cooler than previous weeks. It was overcast and threatening to rain all day. It spat on us a little, but didn’t really rain until we finished our ride. Some local guys have been organizing weekly Sunday afternoon rides at the local trails in Nac lately. Despite the university’s attempts to keep the place hush-hush until the grand opening, everybody in town seems to know about the place. Last week was a short ride due to some mechanical troubles and one of the guys needed to head home early. I decided to take a drive today to check out some trails east of Zavalla that I’d been told about. I was told that bikes were permitted by the USFS, so I wanted to see if they were worth it. In order to take advantage of the short day at the office, I decided to spend some time on the bike. I’ve missed out on the bike a bit lately because of home improvement work. I did get a short mtb ride a couple weeks ago after I helped with some local trail maintenance, but I wanted more. Unfortunately, I am not supposed to post my GPS tracks of the rides yet. The trails are on university property, and they’re technically not finished yet. Right now, it looks like the grand opening won’t happen until May as the trails get finished up. But, the trails are also not closed. The guy in charge of building wants folks to ride the trail so it can be fine-tuned before opening day. So, I’ve been taking advantage. I’ve been working on planning a hiking trip for this trail. Unfortunately, there’s really not many good maps out there. I found a SINGLE map, but it was just an image without coordinates in the margins. How is someone supposed to use a map like this? It’s really not a map if you think about it…it’s just a picture. You can’t even use a compass with it. But I suppose the folks who created want you to buy the real thing, but that’s still a bit dangerous. Today was maintenance day for my old 2003 Specialized Stumpy FSR. Very little of this bike is stock anymore. Basically just the frame, fork, and rear shock (and a few drivetrain bits believe it or not). Being that I’ve been sick and haven’t ridden this bike in so long, I figured it was due for some maintenance. Suspension maintenance in particular. I’ve slacked a bit, and never even changed the oil in this fork or re-lubed the seals. Nada. I was cautiously hopeful that I wouldn’t find a problem. Ok, so it’s not REALLY my first ride. But it’s my first ride since kicking leukemia in the @$$ almost one year ago (dx on 3/10/09 and remission on 4/10/09). I finally planted the rest of my vegetables today. Due to budgetary issues, the wife didn’t want me buying more seed starting gear…I had to make due with what I had. I had some extra starter discs, but I didn’t have a tray to put them in. So I improvised. I’m not using the lid on my big tray anymore, because the plants are too tall. So that top became the bottom for my other veggies. My wife and I visited the Boykin Springs Recreation Area to hike the Sawmill Hiking Trail. The trail is only a few miles long and goes from Boykin Springs to the old Aldridge Sawmill. 6 January 2010 got me going on the indoor trainer for the first time of the year. I’m not in very good shape for outdoor riding yet, and besides, it’s even chilly down here in Texas. I’d be relegated to road riding, and that’s too cold most of the time for road riding. Since I’m not fit or strong enough for the trails yet, that puts me indoors. |
