My plans for riding yesterday were dashed by the fact that it took the snow a lot longer to melt than I had suspected. It was only an inch or MAYBE two, but it didn’t even start to melt off until after noon. I knew the trails would be slop, so I opted to postpone my ride until this morning, and hope that the forecast for rain held off until later in the day. Read more... It took me awhile to get my first ride of 2011 in. No excuses here. I was lazy for the first couple weeks of January, but we’ve also had rain moving through the area on a regular basis since the New Year. We’ll only get a day or two of dry, sunny weather, and up until now, those days have coincided with days I’ve had other stuff to do. Today, I had time to ride, so I took advantage of the nice weather. Read more... (285 words, 0 images, estimated 1:08 mins reading time)
I got an air compressor (well, a gift card for one – because we weren’t going to haul one 2,000 miles with us on our trip to visit family for the holidays) from my wife for Christmas. I ended up choosing a portable Kobalt compressor for my uses, since I mostly just want it for inflating tires (car and bike) and for the occasional other random use (like installing/removing grips and for blowing dirt out of my drivetrain). The inflator and hose that come with the Kobalt compressor are pretty lame, though. There’s not even a pressure gauge on the schrader inflator. Read more... In 2008 I started a little tradition of doing a trip to ride my mountain bike for my birthday. In 2009 I was not well enough for such a trip so I had to skip that year. This year, I chose to ride at Cypress Bend Resort on the trails they just opened this year. It’s about the same distance from me as Tyler State Park and I was hopeful that there might be some good trails there to add to my options. Read more... Just some geotagged pictures from my ride today embedded into a map. And a good ride it was. It was a little bit warm today for mid-late November (80F, I was told), but it was breezy. The trails were surprisingly empty. I got a good ride in…about 15 miles all told (of course, I edited out the portion that shows where I live). Read more... The early October maintenance day for the SFA Rec Trails happened to fall on Livestrong Day. I made sure to represent Livestrong today. I arrived late, but I met up with the group installing some rock gardens on Upper Bois d’Arc.

Yesterday I got the Oregon attached to the stem of my mountain bike for a 10 mile jaunt through town and on the local mtb trails. I have a handful of impressions about how it worked in that application. First, have I mentioned yet how I like the mounting system on this? Read more... Yeah, I’m not new to the game here. This GPS has been reviewed all over the internet already.
But, I decided that the Edge 705 wasn’t really for me. Here’s why:

- I hated the little joystick on the etrex series, and I didn’t like it any better on the Edge.
I can’t believe I forgot to add a map of my mountain bike ride in Hawaii! Shame! Shame! Okay, well here’s a ride report, too. This trail was quite a departure from my local rides. The biggest difference is going to be elevation, of course. This trail starts at around 2800ft and goes up to almost 3500ft, whereas my local trails only have 100ft of change between the lowest and highest points. Read more... Today was the day I decided to ramp up my mileage for my weekly rides. I’ve felt good the past couple of weeks, and ready to increase my mileage. Both my legs and my lungs felt ready for it. In addition, it was a nice day, and I decided to ride from home to the trails. To get a longer ride in without being out later, I had to start earlier. Since it was nice out, I could do that easily enough. I set out from home and picked up the Lanana Creek Trail at its Main St. trailhead. I headed north and saw a number of other folks enjoying the trail on their bikes or on foot. Unfortunately, I flatted my rear tire after not long on the dirt. I had just inflated my tire, so I thought I may have burped some air. I reinflated it and checked for trouble. Sure enough, I heard a loud hissing sound. I looked around for the source of the escaping air and found a puncture. That’s odd…I’ve got sealant in there, it should have sealed this little hole. It looked about the size you’d expect from a piece of broken glass, but the hole was clear. Well, that’s why I carry a spare tube. So I had to pull the tire off and insert a tube. While I had the tire off, I double-checked that a piece of glass wasn’t poking through the tire. Fixing that would have killed the evening. When I got the tire off, I saw why I got a puncture…my sealant was dried up. There were no boogers of any sort, so it appears as though I just didn’t put enough sealant in to start with. I’ll have to remedy that. The tire was clear, however, so I tossed in a tube, inflated to a comfortable pressure, and continued on my ride. Read more...
