Kit McConnico – Lufkin

Today I went to Lufkin to help the folks from DET-TRAC and the Angelina Bike Club with some trail maintenance at Kit McConnico Park. I hadn’t ridden there yet and I thought it’d be a good opportunity to scope the trails out before riding.

Angelina River Canoe Trip – February 2011

The SFA Outdoor Pursuits planned this trip for the stretch of the Angelina River between Highway 63 and Martin Dies Jr. State Park. I was stoked to do this trip. I’ve done a decent bit of paddling, but I’ve never camped out of my canoe before. My wife and I signed ourselves up and hoped for the best.

Video and Maps – SFA Trails Vid Trial 1

As I’ve posted before, I got my hands on a new GoPro HD Hero recently. My first “video” wasn’t much – essentially just a backyard test. I was supposed to get some real footage on Friday, but a mechanical problem halted that. So, Monday was my next opportunity, and I took advantage. I got to get some ride footage of the local trails.

First Bike Video

My GoPro HD Hero arrived today and I got to take a couple minutes of video before it got too dark. I used it on the default settings, which are for 960p HD…essentially a tall HD format. I tried out the chesty mount first because it was the easiest to set up. It is pretty clever. I have quite an assortment of mounts I can use, and I’ll be playing with a couple of them tomorrow when I hit the trails with some buddies.

Nac Trails…Again

Okay, so it’s getting to be time to break the monotony of riding the same place all the time. I need to hit some new trails.

Superbowl Morning Ride

My plans for riding yesterday were dashed by the fact that it took the snow a lot longer to melt than I had suspected. It was only an inch or MAYBE two, but it didn’t even start to melt off until after noon. I knew the trails would be slop, so I opted to postpone my ride until this morning, and hope that the forecast for rain held off until later in the day.

First Ride of 2011

It took me awhile to get my first ride of 2011 in. No excuses here. I was lazy for the first couple weeks of January, but we’ve also had rain moving through the area on a regular basis since the New Year. We’ll only get a day or two of dry, sunny weather, and up until now, those days have coincided with days I’ve had other stuff to do. Today, I had time to ride, so I took advantage of the nice weather.

Prestaflator

I got an air compressor (well, a gift card for one – because we weren’t going to haul one 2,000 miles with us on our trip to visit family for the holidays) from my wife for Christmas. I ended up choosing a portable Kobalt compressor for my uses, since I mostly just want it for inflating tires (car and bike) and for the occasional other random use (like installing/removing grips and for blowing dirt out of my drivetrain). The inflator and hose that come with the Kobalt compressor are pretty lame, though. There’s not even a pressure gauge on the schrader inflator.

Mountain Biking the Hercules Trail (Loop 5) at Cypress Bend Resort

Cypress Bend Nature TrailCypress Bend Nature TrailIn 2008 I started a little tradition of doing a trip to ride my mountain bike for my birthday. In 2009 I was not well enough for such a trip so I had to skip that year. This year, I chose to ride at Cypress Bend Resort on the trails they just opened this year. It’s about the same distance from me as Tyler State Park and I was hopeful that there might be some good trails there to add to my options.

A Fall Ride

Just some geotagged pictures from my ride today embedded into a map. And a good ride it was. It was a little bit warm today for mid-late November (80F, I was told), but it was breezy. The trails were surprisingly empty. I got a good ride in…about 15 miles all told (of course, I edited out the portion that shows where I live).
