I’ve been planning to visit the Upland Island Wilderness for awhile. I ordered a map from MyTopo for this area last summer and I’ve been trying to get out here since. On the 4th, with the wife out of town, I figured I’d go hike in the Upland Island Wilderness. I wanted to see the longleaf pine savannas and the spring-fed bogs at the exposures of the Catahoula Formation and photograph some of the carnivorous plants.

Hey, everybody. I updated my Mountain Bike Rides map and my Paddling map with information from a few backlogged recent trips. For mountain bike rides, I’ve added a few trailheads of places I’ve ridden in the past year. For paddling, I’ve added some river access points in East Texas, as well as a couple campsites along the Angelina River. I added one hiking location to the Hikes map, Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area. You can access the 4C Trail from there, or simply do some dayhiking.
I combined my REI dividend and 20% off coupon to grab a new pack. I really didn’t have a GOOD daypack for hiking, and I needed something I could mountain bike in for longer days. What I have works for short rides, but can’t carry enough gear well for an exploratory day. My wife and I visited the Boykin Springs Recreation Area to hike the Sawmill Hiking Trail. The trail is only a few miles long and goes from Boykin Springs to the old Aldridge Sawmill. On Sunday, I took my first hike since recovering from AML. It couldn’t be a big hike, since I’m pretty out-of-shape, but I did as much as I could. My wife and I opted to hunt for a few geocaches while we were out, since I had a trackable geocoin in my possession for entirely too long. It needed to move along ASAP. My hike ended up being a total of about 6 miles, which included searching for a couple caches. It was a solid hike, which I noticed when I woke up this morning and my calves were incredibly sore. It’s amazing I didn’t get any muscle cramps overnight.
  For my second anniversary, my wife and I went to Mammoth Cave National Park. Overall it was a good trip. My only complaint relates to the HEAVY horse use this park gets…the horses destroy the trails at stream crossings and other wet spots. |
