Almost a year ago, I wrote about Garmin Connect switching to Bing maps. Well, it’s been a long time coming, but Garmin now allows users the option to choose between Bing or Google maps. Last weekend my wife competed in the half marathon in the Nike Women’s Marathon. Some regular readers might recall the fundraising links I posted and some of my readers actually donated (yay!). I thought I’d provide a bit of a trip report. My next paycheck came, so I was able to start buying the last bit of parts I need to finish this build. I bought: Talking to some other riders in the area about our mtb trail opportunities, I got a somewhat crazy idea about linking our area trails together in a big, long ride. I wanted to do it all via county roads, but looking at maps of the area, it became apparent an all-county-road route would not be possible. The problem: the Angelina River bottoms. Between Nacogdoches and Lufkin, there’s only one road that crosses them: US-59. Not the ideal road because of its 70mph speed limit, but it’d really be the only option unless we REALLY wanted to go out of our way and probably spend days riding. Not this time. Ok, so I’ve had to shift gears regarding the commuter bike project because the old Trek was just the wrong size frame. I ended up selling off that old Trek and buying an On-One Pompetamine frame/fork. This is a steel 700c road bike with track dropouts and disc brake mounts. It goes so far with the disc brake mounts that they’re the ONLY brake option for this frame. I bought one in a glow-in-the-dark paint scheme (the fork was not available in that color, so I went with black). It’s been a long time since I’ve gone for a midday ride. It’s been so horrendously hot it’s not been worth it. But with Tropical Storm Lee in the area, we got clouds, wind, and cooler temperatures. I really would have preferred we get some rain along with it, but I’ll take what I can get at this point. I took advantage of the temps and went for a ride. I’ve got the old Trek 420 completely stripped of all its components. The last part that needed removing was one of the rack bolts. It was seized into the frame. I tried everything and had to take the last resort of drilling it out and chasing the threads. That took care of the problem. As you all may be aware, my wife has been raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training to run the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco. I picked up an old Trek 420 road bike from the Bike Shop recently with the goal of turning it into a better commuter than the one I’ve been using. My old commuter is just an old mountain bike with some lights, reflective tape, and a horn. Not especially fast on the road. It’s been awhile since my last post. Grad school is keeping me busy. So are trips to Schlitterbahn and yard work. Yesterday saw a slight cool-down due to northerly breezes and I took advantage. It was in the mid-90′s when I left and down to the mid-80′s when I finished up. |
